Population (2000 Census): 45,109 (14,629 in Brantley County, 15,636 in Pierce County and 14,844 in the Wayne County portion of the district). Brantley in 2000 accounted for 32.4% of the district’s total population, with Pierce having 34.7% and Wayne 32.9%.
 
Minority Percentages: Based on 2000 Census, district is 15.27% black and 2.76% Hispanic.

NOTE: Small portion of city of Waycross land area comes into Pierce County, though most of the city is in Ware County. There were no people living in the Pierce County portion of Waycross in the year 2000.
 
Geography/Land Area: The 178th District covers 1,059 square miles, one of the largest State House districts in Georgia in land area/territory.
 
Registered Voters: According to the Elections Division of the Secretary of State, the district had 22.328 active registered voters as of December 1, 2006. Brantley County (as of that date) had 7,808 active registered voters, while Pierce County had 7,905 active registered voters and the Wayne County portion of the district had 6,615 active registered voters. By race, 10.8% of the district’s registered voters are black, 87.8% are white, 0.1% are Asian, 0.3% are Hispanic and 1.0% include “others”.
Congressional District: All of State House District 178 is within the 1stCongressional District, represented since 1993 by Savannah Congressman Jack Kingston.
 
State Senate Districts: State House District 178 is divided into three State Senate districts, as follows: Brantley County is in Senate District 3 (represented by State Senator Jeff Chapman of Glynn County); Pierce County is located in Senate District 7 (represented by State Senator Greg Goggans of Coffee County) and the Wayne County part of the 178th State House District is located in Senate District 19 (represented by State Senator Tommie Williams of Toombs County).
 
Date of Creation of District’s Counties: Brantley was created in 1920; Pierce in 1857, and Wayne in 1803.
 
Major Highways: U.S. Highways 25, 82, 84, 301 and 341.
 
Railroads: CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern both serve the district. Amtrak (rail passenger service) stops daily in Jesup on its run between New York and Florida. Jesup is one of only five Georgia cities with regularly-scheduled Amtrak service (the others being Atlanta, Gainesville, Savannah and Toccoa).
