REP. WILLIAMS PASSES LEGISLATION HELPING DEBT COLLECTIONS FOR HOUSING AUTHORITIES

The Georgia House of Representatives passed State Representative Mark Williams (R)-Jesup legislation allowing public housing authorities to offset non-payments through collection liens on state income tax return payments.  The legislation, House Bill 327, would allow local housing authorities to be claimants on income tax returns of delinquent and fraudulent renters. The bill has bipartisan support and should receive a full hearing in subcommittee in the coming weeks.  It is estimated that there is some $16 million dollars to be collected state- wide that could be much used in capitol improvements at the local housing authorities.

“I believe this is a legitimate and thoughtful way of capturing monies due to our local tax-payer subsidized housing programs that they can collect from fraudulent renters,” said Rep. Williams.  “I am thrilled that my fellow House members agreed that this was an important issue and overwhelmingly passed it out of the House.”

The legislation passed the House by a 157-6 margin and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Rep. Williams was elected in 2006 to the Georgia House of Representatives and is in his first session.  He represents State House District 178, which includes parts of Wayne County and all of Brantley and Pierce Counties.
